A long way to go even if it's the end of the beginning

In the City of London four months ago, I took part in a symposium on the topic of falling dominoes. The original idea was to discuss which institutions might next be hit by write-offs. In the event, almost no one wanted to talk about that.

The view was that the damage to banks was over, or at least contained. It was time to focus on phase two - the effects on the real economy.
