President Nicolas Sarkozy of France put on an uncharacteristic display of diplomatic discretion on Monday on a lightning visit to Dublin intended to learn the reasons behind Ireland’s rejection of the EU’s Lisbon treaty.

After triggering a political furore in Ireland last week when he told a private meeting in Paris that the Irish would have to “vote again”, the French president insisted he had no “ready-made solution” for the EU’s institutional blockage.
