Bacteria brucella senses light

Brucella, the microbe that causes brucellosis, can sense light and uses the information to regulate its virulence, according to a surprising discovery published today in the journal Science. Researchers at a group of US and Argentinian universities found that brucella was 10 times more virulent in the light than in the dark.

Two other, less well-known, types of bacteria also turned out to be light-sensitive.
