Lonmin boosts defence against Xstrata

Lonmin, the platinum miner, said there could be “significant synergies” in combining its operations with those of Xstrata, which is attempting a hostile £5bn takeover of the group.

However, Lonmin said it would only consider talking to Xstrata about a deal if it raised its proposed offer of £33 a share, so that both sets of shareholders could share the benefits.
