Shenequa Aranda, a Houston mother, was surprised recently by a handwritten sign in the window of a burger restaurant on the outskirts of the city informing customers that it would now cost 15 cents for each extra packet of maple syrup or tomato ketchup.

"That was hilarious - I never heard of that,'' Ms Aranda said.
