White House injects range of spending to boost ailing patient

Condoms, honey bee insurance, ice-breaking polar ships - think of a boon-doggle and the almost $900bn US fiscal stimulus package appears to have it.

That, at least, is what many of its opponents assert. In fact, the projects singled out for criticism account for only $3bn to $5bn of the bill - less than 1 per cent. Moreover, some of these initiatives, such as the $125m to upgrade Washington's sewerage system, would provide genuine stimulus to the economy.
