A BBC plan to extend its local news coverage – potentially imperilling regional newspapers – is being strongly opposed by the government, the Financial Times has learned.

Ministers are believed to be concerned at the BBC’s intention to show local news videos online, and will examine whether they have powers to block the move if the broadcaster’s governing trust fails to do so.
