To understand why almost one in three Swiss voters backed a party branded as extremist and racist by its foes, look no further than ­little Schwyz.

One of the smallest of the 26 cantons, Schwyz encapsulates both the contrasts and complexities of contemporary Switzerland and the appeal of the SVP, its biggest party, which took 29 per cent of the poll at last Sunday’s federal election.
