The day after Nationwide revealed the return of the 125 per cent home loan was an odd day for Redrow and Barratt to warn that undue prudence in the mortgage market was preventing a recovery in the housebuilding sector.
Yet, their concerns have some foundation. Housebuilders blame the choking-off of mortgage finance since last spring for being the main cause of nearly £3bn in losses from the UK’s listed builders.
