Russia’s prison service on Thursday said that the death in jail of Sergei Magnitsky, the 37-year-old lawyer for a western investment fund, had left a “serious stain” on Russia’s judicial system and admitted that it was partly to blame.
“This was a deplorable incident, which has left a serious stain on the entire work of our judicial system,” said Alexander Smirnov, the deputy head of Russia’s prison service. “We are not in any sense playing down our guilt, which clearly exists.”
