Treasury chief issues plea for pay restraint

Britain's workers were yesterday given a government warning that they risk triggering a 1970s-style wageinflation spiral if they pursue "irresponsible" pay rises to offset rising food and fuel costs.

Yvette Cooper, Treasury chief secretary, called for pay discipline - starting in the boardroom - as the government braced itself for figures tomorrow showing inflation rising above 3 per cent.
