For many Egyptians, the killing of an 11-year-old schoolboy by his maths teacher in October was another shocking reminder of the failings in their national education system. Islam Badr suffered internal injuries when he was kicked in the stomach by Haitham Abdul Hamid, 23, at a state primary school in Alexandria. He was being punished for not completing his homework.
Violence has become commonplace in schools where low-paid, under-trained teachers with few resources struggle to control classes of 60 to 100 children.
