Taiwanese aim to promote new industries

Signs of recession are rare on the streets of Taipei, in spite of dire economic data. The government’s issuance of T$3,600 ($110, €79, £69) in consumer vouchers to each Taiwanese has ensured that restaurants, cinemas and shops remain bustling.

Government stimulus measures helped drive a slight increase in private consumption in the first quarter, even as the rest of the economy suffered and gave hope for alternate sources of growth.
