US unemployment highest since 1994

The US unemployment rate shot up to a 14-year high of 6.5 per cent in October, new data showed on Friday, while the economy shed 240,000 jobs in further evidence of the economic crisis confronting Barack Obama as he heads to the White House.

The labour department report figures were far worse than economists’ forecasts of 200,000 lost jobs and 6.3 per cent unemployment.
