Bush threatens to veto mortgage bill

The White House on Tuesday threatened to veto the most prominent and aggressive piece of legislation being proposed by congressional Democrats to tackle the mortgage crisis.

“The principal beneficiaries of this type of plan would be private lenders – who are now the owners of the vacant or foreclosed properties – instead of struggling homeowners who are working hard to stay in their homes,” said the administration statement.
