Rising in the east

Standing in the middle of the huge building site for the Stratford City retail complex, you could almost believe that the recession had never happened. This is the most palpable sign of the Olympics effect on east London.

Shopping centre operator Westfield is building the largest retail-led mixed use regeneration project in the UK. Due to open in Spring 2011, it will be a 175,000 sq m shopping and entertainment complex and the gateway to the Olympic park.
