Verdict dashes hope of change in Burma

The decision by the generals who run Burma to extend Aung San Suu Kyi’s incarceration by a further 18 months has snuffed out the dim hope that the regime is becoming more sensitive to international pressure for democratic reforms.

Tuesday’s verdict was widely expected: governments and international rights organisations released prepared condemnations only minutes after it was announced.
