Delta chief warns on ‘tough’ trading

Delta Air Lines reported a quarterly net loss due to lacklustre demand for air travel, while rival AirTran Holdings swung to a profit on lower fuel costs.

The two Atlanta-based companies’ results, which came after those of peers such as United Airlines and Southwest Airlines, highlighted the role of cost cuts as the industry’s best defence against its steep drop in revenue.
