Retail sales fell in May following a robust performance a month earlier, but the sector remains strong compared with other parts of the economy.

The CBI’s monthly distributive trades survey, published on Thursday, showed sales were weaker than in April – which was boosted by the timing of Easter – but stronger than any month before that for almost a year.
