Reluctant spenders slow German recovery

When Mediamarkt, the consumer electronics chain, opened its new central-Berlin branch this month, it did not expect to make the front pages of local newspapers.

The “storming of Alexanderplatz” claimed 15 wounded – including one bargain-hunter who crashed through a window – and only ended when 100 policemen escorted out the frenzied shoppers.
