An ill wind blows over central and eastern Europe

Just a year ago eastern Europe was viewed as the shining light of the continent, the flexible, dynamic “new Europe” that was set to upstage the sluggish, old economies of the west.

Western investors upped their exposure and domestic investors fuelled strong growth in eastern Europe’s mutual funds sector, even as many western countries reported net outflows.
