President Nicolas Sarkozy’s announcement last year that he was ready to return France to the heart of Nato’s military structures after four decades of absence was widely and rightly welcomed.

It appeared to offer an end to years of sterile argument over European defence between France and Nato’s other two important military powers, the US and Britain.
