Rescue hopes drive dollar higher

The dollar surged higher on Tuesday as shock over the US administration’s failure to push its $700bn financial rescue plan through Congress gave way to optimism that a deal would eventually be struck.

After a record points fall in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday, some Asian stock markets were able to claw back early losses on Tuesday, while European and US shares staged a comeback.
