Industry in tentative recovery

The world of metals and mining is in a queasy state of optimism following its terrifying dislocation over the past year. “If only it lasts!” – the exclamation of Napoleon’s mother – would be an apt quote of the day across metals traders’ Bloomberg screens.

A range of indicators points to a surprising recovery from 12 months ago, when commodities prices and mining companies’ share prices were in freefall – well on their way to making mining the second most affected sector of the post-Lehman-collapse economy after financial services.
