Brown warns on protectionism

Gordon Brown warned on Friday that the government’s bail-out of the banks would not be extended to other ailing industries during the recession, as he denounced protectionism as “the road to ruin”.

The prime minister knows he will face pressure from Labour MPs and trade unionists to use state aid to rescue companies going to the wall, pointing to the £37bn rescue of three high street banks as a precedent.
