Mike Ashley, the sportswear retailer, is putting Newcastle United up for sale for the second time in seven months in the wake of the football club’s relegation from the Premier League.

Mr Ashley formally appointed Seymour Pierce, the broker, last week as advisers on the sale, which it is now thought could fetch up to £100m.
