Violence hits hopes of Congo political deal

Efforts at political reconciliation between Congo’s incumbent president and his defeated election rival suffered a severe setback on Tuesday after gunmen opened fire outside the Supreme Court in the capital, Kinshasa.

Police used tear gas against supporters of Jean-Pierre Bemba, a former rebel and vice-president, as they chanted outside the court, where Mr Bemba is challenging President Joseph Kabila’s poll victory.
