Russian approval rescues climate treaty

The future of international co-operation to protect the environment was secured yesterday when theRussian government approved the Kyoto protocol on climate change.

Without yesterday'sdecision, the landmark treaty could have been in doubt, jeopardising efforts to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases blamed for causing global climate change and extreme fluctuations in the world's weather.
