Unity over Turkish campus scarf ban

Rectors of Turkey's state universities are to meet in Ankara today to adopt a united stance in opposing a controversial government proposal to ease the ban on the wearing of the Muslim headscarf on campus.

Amid mounting opposition to the proposal, which could be approved by MPs by the end of next week, the rectors have condemned what they claim is a weakening of Turkey's constitutional commitment to secular education.
