Theo Fennell, the up-market jeweller known for celebrity clients including David Beckham and Elton John, announced a heavy loss after a difficult year that saw it abandon ambitious expansion plans and bring back its founder.

The company reported a full year pre-tax loss of more than £3m on weakening sales and large write-offs.
