UK union in Magna deal over Opel jobs

Britain’s biggest trade union, Unite, said on Tuesday that it had struck a deal with Magna, the proposed new owners of Opel and Vauxhall, to keep producing cars at General Motors’ two UK plants beyond 2013, saving hundreds of jobs.

The agreement has removed a key obstacle to the Canadian company’s takeover of Opel and Vauxhall with Russia’s Sberbank and raised hopes that a wider deal between European governments, unions and Magna could be sealed soon.
