IBM upbeat on 2009 profits forecast

IBM gave the flagging technology sector a much-needed boost on Tuesday as it registered an unexpectedly strong bounce in fourth-quarter earnings and issued a bullish forecast for 2009 profits, in spite of pressure on its revenues from the global slowdown.

The news came amid a fresh round of pessimism about the impact on technology companies from falling corporate IT spending and weak consumer spending, with tech stocks among the hardest hit on Wall Street.
