The number of African-Americans jailed in state prisons in the US on drugs charges has been falling and the number of whites rising sharply, according to a report by a Washington think-tank.
The study documents the effect of changing patterns of drug use and law-enforcement on the prison population. Although it found black Americans were still by far the largest racial group among those convicted for drugs crimes, its conclusions will challenge ingrained prejudices about drug abuse in the US.
