Northern Ireland: Struggle to shake off troubled legacy

A former Bank of England agent in Northern Ireland used to say you got a pretty good fix on the state of the regional economy by watching the trucks coming off the ferry in Belfast docks.

The agent’s offices have since moved and the economy, too, has changed, with the onset of peace and the restoration of local devolved government in May.
