Tories turn up heat over immigration

The bitter exchanges between the parties over immigration and asylum intensified on Friday as Michael Howard accused the government of giving “special privileges for special interest groups”.

In a speech claiming Britain was the home of “fair play”, the Conservative leader sought to cast his party as the voice of common sense in contrast to the government which he said seemed “to have a completely different set of values to everyone else.”
