The Council of Mortgage Lenders is pushing for an early announcement on whether the Bank of England's scheme to unblock the mortgage market will be extended beyond its October deadline.

The industry body said yesterday in a letter to Alistair Darling, the chancellor, that a decision on whether to renew the Bank's special liquidity scheme and other measures would "help resolve market uncertainty".
