UK Trade & Investment, the trade promotion body, last year organised its largest ever annual business event in the Gulf region, introducing eager British businesses to commercial officers from embassies across the Arab world.

More than 200 small-to-medium-sized enterprises turned up, seeking opportunities in the oil-rich Gulf, the “booming and diversifying” region that Lord Mandelson, the UK business secretary, prioritised as vital to British business interests while on a trip to the region last year.
