Manila pressed to toughen safeguards

The Philippine government is facing rising pressure to take action to help safeguard the lives of Filipino crews on cargo ships as a growing number find themselves the victims of piracy.

Philippine nationals account for a fifth of the more than 1.2m international shipping crew workers and consequently they are at greater risk than most from marine piracy – Somali pirates are currently holding 127 Filipinos, the highest number ever.
