Italy to win two years' grace on budget

The Italian government will be given until 2007 to bring the country's excessive budget deficit into line and stave off the threat of sanctions under the European Union's reformed stability and growth pact.

The move, to be announced on Wednesday by the European Commission, offers some breathing space to the embattled government, on Monday confronted with worrying evidence of a prolonged recession.
