When a meter reader needed to get into the Chelsea townhouse of the Earl of Iveagh, one of the fund managers at the Guinness heir’s family office used to nip round to let him in.

When a family member lost his credit cards in Madrid, the family office was the obvious place to turn for emergency cash. Organising the release of sheep stuck in fences on family estates also occasionally featured on the list of fund managers’ duties.
