Surprise at Rato’s decision to leave IMF

Rodrigo Rato stunned colleagues on Thursday with the surprise announcement that he is stepping down early as managing director of the International Monetary Fund.

Mr Rato cited “family circumstances and responsibilities, particularly with regard to the education of my children” as the reason for quitting shortly after the IMF’s annual meeting in October.
