The biggest foreign policy priority lies close to home

When John McCain suspended his presidential campaign, shortly after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, Barack Obama issued an effective put-down. “It is going to be part of a president’s job”, he said, “to cope with more than one thing at once.”

The truth of that remark will be brought home forcibly to Mr Obama the moment he enters the Oval Office.
