EU banana battle looms as Spain seeks protection

The European Union faces a fresh banana war, with Spain threatening to veto new trade deals with Europe's former colonies unless its domestic producers are better protected from a likely influx of the fruit.

The EU is seeking to reach economic partnership agreements (EPAs) with 79 poor countries by the end of the year after the World Trade Organisation ruled its preferential trade regime illegal.
