BT will launch a new challenge to mobile phone operators today as it announces plans to bring to the high street a handset offering cheap internet calls using wi-fi technology.

Phones4U, the mobile phone retailer, will begin selling BT's new Fusion phone in the spring, backed by a multi-million pound advertising campaign by BT.
