EU official’s US travel warning ruffles feathers

A top US official said on Monday that the European Union had overreacted to the outbreak in swine flu when it advised travellers against visiting the country, even as he himself cited the disease as a reason not to travel to Mexico.

Responding to a personal warning from a European commissioner against travel to the US, Richard Besser, acting director of the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said any such restriction was unwarranted because of the limited number and seriousness of cases in the country.
