Wall St rallies on housing data

Wall Street stocks built on last week’s positive close as investors were cheered by better-than-expected US housing data and news that JPMorgan had sharply increased its offer for Bear Stearns to win over shareholders.

Last week the Federal Reserve engineered a takeover of Bear Stearns at a fire-sale price after the investment bank came close to bankruptcy when its counterparties refused to trade with it.
