Best Buy, the largest US electronics retail chain, on Wednesday warned that a “seismic” drop in sales would hit its earnings, just three days after rival Circuit City filed for bankruptcy protection.

The retailer, which is planning to open stores in the UK next year through a joint venture with Carphone Warehouse, said comparable sales at its almost 1,000 US stores fell 7.8 per cent in October.
