Like the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, Tutankhamun is unrivalled as the main attraction of the Egyptian Museum, an imposing neoclassical building in central Cairo. The never-ending string of visitors is constantly knotted around a vitrine in a dimly-lit upstairs room which contains his golden burial mask.
About 4,500 artefacts discovered at Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 are kept at the museum. The long gallery where many are displayed never fails to impress tourists but often confuses them with its chaotic organisation. Many people complain about overcrowding, the lack of signs or the noise of the downtown location.
