East Asia powers ahead on stem cell research

A horrific chopstick injury suffered during a fight in a Shanghai restaurant has triggered one of the world's most innovative stem cell research programmes, a London conference heard yesterday.

Jianhong Zhu, professor of neurosurgery at the city's Fudan University's Huashan Hospital, extracted the chopstick, which had been pushed deep inside the patient's skull, and removed fresh brain tissue from the bamboo implement.
