Foreign office minister resigns

Lord Malloch-Brown, the frankly spoken foreign office minister, announced on Tuesday night that he is to step down as a government minister this summer for “personal and family reasons”.

The departure of the seasoned diplomat, admired in Whitehall for his knowledge of Africa and development issues, will be a blow to Gordon Brown, who hired him in 2007 as a “goat”: a member of his “government of all the talents”.
